Take Care Of Your Luxury Jewelry – The Ultimate Care Guide

You would have heard about several grandmother’s heirlooms and clever tricks to clean your luxury jewelry like using toothpaste to make the diamonds sparkle, ketchup for removing tarnish from the silver jewelry, or giving a beer bath to the gold jewelry to make it shine. Now while these luxury jewelry cleaning tips seem like good  suggestions to give to someone ,  your heart will surely skip a beat  if you were to ever try these on your own jewelry? Your precious jewelry deserves  extra effort for better maintenance, which is why  you need to learn how to safely take care of your own jewelry and not just rely on any such  quirky methods.

Here are few reliable tips  to make your jewelry look like new once again without the need of fancy jewelry cleaners.

Cleaning Silver Jewelry

Take one cup of hot water in a bowl and dissolve one spoonful of salt in it. Also, put 2-3 strips of aluminum foil in the bowl. The reaction of salt & aluminum will remove the tarnish on the sliver’s surface and leave it bright & shiny.

Note: Silver should not be exposed to chlorine as it can cause pitting (erosion or formation of little holes). So avoid wearing silver jewelry in pools.

Cleaning Gold jewelry

Gold doesn’t develop dull tarnished finish overtime like Silver, but it can easily accumulate dirt and grime  with regular use. To restore the shine of your gold jewelry (only complete gold jewelry, not the one studded with stones or pearls), dip it in a solution of one teaspoon ammonia, one teaspoon of liquid dish soap and one cup of warm water. Clean the pieces with a  soft bristled brush and then rinse it well with tap water.

Note: To clean gold jewelry studded with gemstones or diamonds, use a clean cloth dipped in soapy liquid and gently scrub your jewelry. Once done, take another clean wet cloth to remove leftover soapy residue from jewelry pieces.

Cleaning Pearl Jewelry

Immerse your pearl string or earrings for 10 to 15 seconds in a solution made up with 1 teaspoon of Woolite diluted in 1 quart of water and then pat dry it with soft cotton cloth.

Note: The best way to clean pearls is by wearing them, as the body’s natural oil always keeps them polished. While storing them in your luxury jewelry box, keep them separately in a cotton bag (not in plastic) to make them stay lustrous.

Cleaning Diamond Jewelry  Aside from being a girl’s best friend, diamonds require proper care and attention . To keep your diamond ring’s/pendant’s shine intact, soak them in a solution of 1 cup warm water and ¼ cup of ammonia for about 20 minutes. Then gently scrub it with a soft bristle brush to clean the small spaces between the diamonds. Once done, rinse the jewelry pieces with warm water and pat dry with the soft cloth.

Note: Do not clean your diamond jewelry with toothpaste. It might bring back the shine of your diamonds but  harms the soft metal setting around the diamonds.

Cleaning Gemstones

Gems like turquoise, opal, pearl, lapis or coral are delicate and can get damaged by abrasion, heat or chemicals. So to clean them, just wipe clean them with a non-treated, soft leather cloth.

Note: It is better to wear your gemstone jewelry after applying cosmetics, body lotion, or perfume.
